The road for combo guard Koby Isaac has been a long one. From being a 2019 three-star Atlanta prospect to a honorable mention JUCO all-american in 2021 for Southeastern community college in I.
Now after a successful season 2022-23 season with Palm Beach State he is looking for the next level with a major D1 program. Isaac averaged 13.2 points with 3.1 rebounds shooting 35% from long range and 83% from the free throw line for Palm Beach State last season. Isaac is the cousin of Villanova legend and former NBA player Darriun Hillard. He talked with me about his recruitment and how his game has developed for High Level Sports
Leader: Your best games this past year came against top D1JUCOs schools in Florida (Indian River, Eastern Florida State, FSW, etc.). What about playing these teams elevates your game?
Koby: The better the competition the better I play. I enjoy playing against elite teams and players. It’s my comfort zone. These types of games allow me to use my whole arsenal.
Leader: What Division 1 team(s) have you heard from and how has overall recruitment been?
Koby: UTSA expressed interest toward end of the season. However, outside of that, no D1 schools have yet to reach out. Far as overall recruitment has started spotty. But now is starting to pick up. I think the transfer portal hurt me a lot. But also the lack of game-time exposure. I don’t think coaches have had a chance to see me play this year.
Leader: What type of offense caters to your game?
Koby: I feel my game is adaptable to multiple offenses. My ability to shoot a set shot or off the dribble allows me to flourish in a half-court set or on a fast break. However, I tend to play best when the tempo is controlled by the offense.
Leader: Last season what were the stats of your best game? What were the results of that game?
Koby: Against Indian River- 28 pts (5-10) 3pt, 3 rebs, 2 asts, 1 stl and we lost that game.
Leader: You have always been a complete guard. What would you say has improved about your game?
Koby: My defense and my rebounding efforts. My stats don’t reflect great rebounding. But if you were to watch my game you would notice me box out taller players which allowed my teammates the ability to rebound the ball. I call this a rebound assist. I did a lot of that this year. I did not get credit for the rebound but I cleared it for my teammate to get the credit. My defense has improved a lot. My points allowed by competitors were constantly low this season. I had to guard the 1-4 position this past season and I enjoyed the challenge.
Leader: What was your biggest challenge this year?
Koby: I had a young team with almost no college playing experience. Which is not a knock against them. However, I had to learn to be patient and understanding. Because there were times when I got frustrated. Many times I sacrificed individual stats especially in games against easier competition in order to help my teammates with playing time and building confidence. I learned it wasn’t about leading in all the stats, but rather leading the team period.
Leader: Tell me why should a college coach recruit you? Why Koby?
Koby: I am a competitor. I hate to lose and I am willing to do whatever it takes to win a game. I bring plenty of things to the table like my offensive ability to score on all three levels. My ability to guard multiple positions. I have a great attitude, on and off the court. I feel like my game has a unique maturity to it that college coaches will appreciate.
